Verdict. SpicyChat is my first stop if you want to play characters rather than run a relationship: nearly a million community characters, a filter that genuinely stays off for adult fiction, and tools no other platform hands a game master for free. The grade lands at B because memory only becomes usable for long scenes on the $19.95 tier, and because a privacy policy from 2023 lets the company do a great deal with your chats. For short sessions the free tier is enough; for a campaign it is not.

I ran pen-and-paper tables for ten years before I started measuring AI character apps by the same standards, and SpicyChat is the platform where that angle pays off most. This is not about a girlfriend who remembers your workday; it is about characters who are supposed to hold a role: the innkeeper who does not suddenly know everything, the interrogator who defends his position, the old acquaintance on a quiet evening. So this SpicyChat review does not ask "does this feel real" — it asks "does the character hold the scene, and for how long".

Which is exactly why I start with the money, because at SpicyChat the answer to the memory question is a pricing question. Since September 8, 2026 the entry tier costs $5.95 a month instead of $5.00, the middle one $19.95 instead of $14.95 and the top one $29.95 instead of $24.95; the annual prices are $60, $199.95 and $299.95. And here is the uncomfortable part: the cheapest paid tier does not buy a larger context window. If you subscribe to it for better memory, you bought the wrong product.

My protocol was the usual one. First the free tier, long enough to run into the daily limit and the queue on a busy evening. Then one paid month of Get a Taste and one paid month of True Supporter, each with my three fixed scenes, a memory test after a seven-day break, a group chat, a lorebook and a round of Director Mode. On top of that I read the terms of service, the community guidelines and the privacy policy in full, because in this genre the fine print is part of the product.

The numbers below come from the documentation at docs.spicychat.ai, checked on October 1, 2026, from my own card statements, and at exactly one point from moderator statements and third-party tests: SpicyChat does not publish the daily message allowance on the free tier, and I flag it every time a figure comes from there. Prices are in US dollars, as they appear on the checkout page; what ends up on your own statement depends on the exchange rate and local tax.

What is SpicyChat?

In one paragraph

SpicyChat (spicychat.ai) is a roleplay platform with no content filter for consensual adult fiction, run since 2023 by NextDay AI Incorporated in Montreal. You pick a character out of a community library of nearly a million, build your own or import character cards from other apps, and play in the browser or through an Android APK. A free tier with ads, a peak-hour queue and a daily limit sits beneath three paid tiers: Get a Taste at $5.95, True Supporter at $19.95 and I'm All In at $29.95 a month. What you are mainly buying is context memory, stronger models, images in chat and voice output. In some countries and US states, adult content is only visible after an age check through a third-party provider.

How I tested SpicyChat

Three weeks, three tiers, the same three scenes. In week one I paid nothing and deliberately played on a Friday night to see the queue and the daily limit. Week two ran on Get a Taste at $5.95, week three on True Supporter at $19.95, each booked for one month and canceled before renewal. I ran every scene on the free models and on the tier models, then left the account alone for seven days and asked, with no warning, about a detail from the first session. I did not pay for the top tier myself; what I write about it comes from the documentation and from user reports, and it says so in that spot.

  • Tiers checked: Free; Get a Taste $5.95/month or $60/year; True Supporter $19.95/month or $199.95/year; I'm All In $29.95/month or $299.95/year
  • Paid out of pocket: $5.95 for one month of Get a Taste and $19.95 for one month of True Supporter, both canceled before renewal
  • Context window: 4,096 / 4,096 / 8,192 / 32,768 tokens for Free, Get a Taste, True Supporter and I'm All In; reply length 180 tokens on the two lower tiers and 300 tokens on the two upper ones
  • Free tier: Two models (SpicyChat Default and TheSpice), three personas, ads, a peak-hour queue, no auto response in group chat; daily limit around 100 messages according to moderator statements and third-party tests, counting both sides
  • Memory test after 7 days: In the 4,096-token window the detail set in the first session was gone; with Semantic Memory 2.0 from True Supporter up it came back unprompted
  • Game master tools: Lorebook with up to 5,000 entries of 2,000 characters each, Memory Manager with entries up to 250 characters, group chat with 2 to 10 characters, Director Mode via /cmd
  • Not tested myself: I'm All In with 32,768 tokens, voice output and custom voices; the age check, because it was not required where I tested
  • Documents read: Pricing FAQ from September 2026, Premium Features, Tokens & Context, community guidelines, terms of service and privacy policy

What SpicyChat gets right

The library is a well a game master can draw from instantly

Nearly a million characters according to the documentation, searchable by tag, with exclusion filters, sorting by trending, new and popular, and a feed that learns from your favorites. For me that is the real value: I no longer have to write a character from scratch to test a scene, I find a finished innkeeper with an accent and a backstory and start playing in two minutes. Character cards from other apps can be imported and exported again, so you are not locked in. And if one creator's characters are not for you, a single click hides their entire catalog from your feed.

The filter stays off, and the limits are written down

For consensual fiction between adult characters SpicyChat does not break the scene, does not lecture and does not suddenly change tone — on every tier, the free one included. More important to me than the promise is the rule set behind it: the community guidelines list what stays banned, from anything involving minors through non-consensual scenarios to characters based on real private individuals. I spent six years as a forum moderator writing rules like these, and these are better than most of the competition, which just writes "no filter" on the landing page.

From True Supporter up there is real scene memory instead of marketing words

At $19.95 a month the context window doubles to 8,192 tokens, reply length rises to 300 tokens, and Semantic Memory 2.0 switches on, condensing older messages into compact memories and searching them while answering. Next to it sits the Memory Manager, where I create, edit, pin or delete memories of up to 250 characters myself. That is the difference between a character who forgets the setup after forty turns and one who reminded me on day seven, unprompted, of the promise from the first session. For a campaign, that is the tier that counts.

SpicyChat publishes its limits as numbers, not adjectives

Context in tokens per tier, reply length in tokens, how many personas, which models, how much of the context budget the lorebook eats, what the September 2026 price increase changed and the fact that existing subscribers keep their price as long as they do not switch tier or billing period: all of it is in the documentation. At most apps I am lucky if I can even guess the context window. That earns points with me, not because it is cheap, but because I can verify what I am paying for.

Where SpicyChat frustrated me

Who $5.95 is the wrong product for

Get a Taste removes the ads, skips the queue, raises personas from three to ten and adds two models. The context window stays at exactly 4,096 tokens and the reply length at 180 tokens, identical to the free tier. If you subscribe to that tier so the character stops forgetting, you are paying for comfort and getting no memory; my scene collapsed at the same point in both cases. If memory is your reason, budget $19.95 from the start.

Who the privacy terms rule it out for

The privacy policy is dated May 4, 2023, names a retention period of "as long as necessary" with no time frame, and describes no way to delete individual chats. The terms of service grant the company the right to use your characters, their outputs and the chats with them for any purpose, to copy, display, modify, sell them and pass that permission on to partners. No opt-out from training is described anywhere. That is why privacy sits at 5 out of 10 in my table, and if you need more than that, this is the wrong place.

Who the device or the evening is a problem for

There has been no iOS app since August 27, 2025; Apple removed it, existing installations stopped working a month later, and the documentation considers a return unlikely. On an iPhone you are left with Safari and the home screen, and on Android there is an APK from the website instead of a Play Store listing. Then there is the queue: on busy evenings I waited between half a minute and a quarter of an hour on the free tier, and that is precisely what the first paid tier is sold against.

Who missing refunds and Discord support are not enough for

The documentation describes at length how subscriptions are activated by card, bank transfer, Boosty or crypto, and says nothing about refunds. So assume there are none and cancel in time before the month renews. Support runs through a ticket form and a Discord server where moderators answered me surprisingly fast, but there is no phone number and no guaranteed response time. The unclaimed Trustpilot profile sits at 2.0 out of 63 reviews, and the complaints are about automated moderation and waiting times.

Who should actually use SpicyChat

SpicyChat is worth it for people who want to play and do not want to be tied down. You want a tavern scene today, an interrogation tomorrow and a science-fiction character the day after, you like writing yourself, and a large selection matters more to you than one single character who knows your daily life. For that purpose this platform is my first recommendation, and in this order: try it for free, and if you stay, go straight to True Supporter at $19.95, because that is where the memory starts.

It is also worth it for people who build their own characters. Lorebook, Memory Manager, Director Mode and group chat are tools you can use to set up a world, and they are documented down to the token. If you come from pen-and-paper and are used to notes, keywords and stage directions, this will feel familiar. My guide to character building shows the fields that keep a character in role.

SpicyChat is nothing for people looking for a companion who knows how their week went, for anyone who does not want their chats covered by an "any purpose" license, or for anyone who needs an iPhone app. Nomi remembers considerably more for $15.99, Nastia is the calmer option with clearer house rules, and Candy AI is the pick if the scene should mainly deliver images.

My three scenes on SpicyChat: tavern, interrogation, quiet evening

I run the same three scenes on every app, because after ten years at the game master’s end of the table I know where roleplay actually fails. The tavern tests whether a character can invent surroundings and side characters without grabbing the plot. The interrogation tests whether she holds a position while I push for ten turns. The quiet evening tests the hardest thing of all: whether two people can talk to each other when nothing is happening.

In the tavern SpicyChat was strong right away, and that is down to the library. The characters are written by users, many of them by people who clearly play themselves, and a well-written innkeeper arrives with an accent, a price for a room and an opinion about the town council. The free models SpicyChat Default and TheSpice hold those instructions reliably; what they lack is variance. After a long session the same sentence openings come back, and I started predicting lines before they finished typing.

The interrogation is the scene where the tiers separate. On the free models my character gave in after about a dozen turns: first she defended her story, then she went soft, then she agreed with me because I was the one doing the talking. With the True Supporter models, above all Noromaid 45B, she held her ground, stayed rude and produced a counterargument I had not supplied. That is the moment this platform feels like a fellow player and not like a mirror.

The memory test after seven days

After each scene I leave the app alone for a week and then ask, with no warning, about a detail I set in the first session: a promise, a name, a debt. On the free tier and on Get a Taste it was gone, identically in both cases, because both tiers run on 4,096 tokens. The character was friendly, in role and clueless, and she started inventing things that sounded half right, which inside a running story is worse than honest forgetting.

With True Supporter the same test went differently. Semantic Memory 2.0 had turned the first session into a compact memory, and the character brought the promise up herself before I asked. That is not magic, it is condensation plus search, and it has a visible limit: whatever does not make it into the condensation is lost there too. If you want to be sure, write the three things the story rests on into the Memory Manager by hand as well.

The quiet evening was the best thing I have seen here, and at the same time the point where the reply length hurts. At 180 tokens per reply on the free tier and the first paid tier you get two or three sentences; a calm scene needs pauses, glances and subordinate clauses. With 300 tokens from True Supporter up, the same chat suddenly became a scene I would have written down. Anyone looking for a spicy chat AI in this category and picturing fast escalation underestimates how much of it is decided by pacing.

SpicyChat pricing 2026: which tier buys the memory for long scenes

SpicyChat pricing is simple and gets misunderstood in exactly one place, but constantly: the cheapest paid tier does not buy memory. Everything else fits in a table, and the figures below come from the documentation, checked on October 1, 2026.

Tier Price Context Reply length What you actually gain
Free $0 4,096 tokens 180 tokens Whole library, two models, three personas, ads, queue
Get a Taste $5.95/month · $60/year 4,096 tokens 180 tokens No ads, no queue, ten personas, Memory Manager, two more models
True Supporter $19.95/month · $199.95/year 8,192 tokens 300 tokens Semantic Memory 2.0, 50 personas, six extended models, images on selected characters
I’m All In $29.95/month · $299.95/year up to 32,768 tokens 300 tokens 100 personas, priority generation, images everywhere, voice output, the heaviest models

Since September 8, 2026 all three paid tiers cost more: from $5.00, $14.95 and $24.95 to $5.95, $19.95 and $29.95, and annually from $50, $149.95 and $249.95 to $60, $199.95 and $299.95. The documentation explicitly describes this as a pure price change with no feature reshuffle, and it guarantees existing subscribers their price as long as they do not switch tier or billing period. That is a rule worth money: an old True Supporter at $14.95 jumps to the new price at the first upgrade.

My recommendation after three weeks is awkward, because it skips the entry tier. Get a Taste is fair for people who play briefly and often and want no ads and no waiting. The moment a scene lasts longer than a train ride, it is the wrong tier, because the context window stays identical. The jump from $5.95 to $19.95 changes the product; the jump from $19.95 to $29.95 changes almost nothing but the number in front, unless you want voice output or work with very large world notes. What a month really costs here does not depend on images, unlike the token apps, only on the tier: there are no credits, no coins and no top-ups, and that is an underrated advantage. If you play every evening you pay $19.95 and know at the end of the month that it was $19.95. At Candy AI the list price is lower and the final bill higher as soon as images and video come into it. How that compares against flat-rate apps is in the AI character app ranking; Nomi, for instance, asks $15.99 and counts no messages at all.

Playing SpicyChat free: what a campaign survives on the free tier

Playing SpicyChat free is not bait, and in this category that is rare. You get the same characters, the same switched-off filter and the same interface as a paying user, plus two models, three personas, ads and a queue at peak hours. Nobody asks for a card.

The limit is the daily allowance, and here I have to separate things cleanly: SpicyChat does not publish that number. Moderator statements and third-party tests from 2026 name about 100 messages a day, counting both sides, so roughly 50 exchanges; before that, according to the same sources, it was 150, and 2,000 when the platform launched. On a Friday night with a scene that was going well I was done in about an hour. Enough for an interrogation; not enough for an evening with three characters.

Then there is the queue, and it is deliberately noticeable: what the first paid tier delivers first, according to the documentation, is skipping that line. In quiet hours I noticed nothing; at the US evening peak my waits ran between half a minute and a quarter of an hour. Anyone who plays at that time is trained to pay within a week, and that is the purpose of the design.

My verdict for the budget-minded: the free tier is the best way to find out in two evenings whether AI roleplay is for you at all, and it is too thin to carry a continuing story. If you never want to pay anything, the Character AI alternatives list has the apps with the more generous free tiers, but you give up something on character quality and tools there.

Lorebook, Director Mode and group chat: SpicyChat as a game master’s tool

This is where it gets more interesting for me than any companion app, because the platform hands you the things that at a real table are called notes, stage directions and supporting cast. The lorebook is the folder for your world: up to 5,000 entries, each with 2,000 characters of room and a list of keywords that call it up. If one of those words falls within the last four messages, the matching entry slides into context and stays there for roughly two turns before making room again. That sounds technical, but it is exactly the mechanism by which a city, an order or a family secret only appears in a character’s head when it is needed.

The price for it is in the documentation too: the lorebook claims around 20 percent of the context budget, so about 740 tokens on the free tier, 1,600 on True Supporter and 3,080 on I’m All In. In the 4,096-token window that means every world note costs conversation memory directly. On the free tier I therefore kept only three entries, and fifteen on the middle tier without the scene suffering for it.

The Memory Manager is the second tool and is available from any paid tier. There you see what the platform has stored, and you create your own memories of up to 250 characters, edit them, pin them or delete them. If I delete a memory, the character stops referring to it; what she said earlier stays in the log unchanged. For me that is the difference between a black box and a notepad, and it is why I recommend this platform to anyone who builds their own characters; the fields for that are in my guide to creating your own AI character.

One more sentence about model choice, because it matters at the table: the documentation points out that a model can push the usable context below the tier limit, and the smaller value always wins. So a tier with 32,768 tokens is not 32,768 tokens on a small model. If you are planning long scenes, pick not just the tier but also the model deliberately inside the chat, and check after twenty turns whether the character still knows the beginning.

That leaves two conversation tools. Group chat puts two to ten characters into a scene; the documentation recommends fewer than six, and for me four was the limit beyond which nobody interrupted anybody any more. Paying users get Auto Response, which picks the speaking order automatically; on the free tier you tap the next speaker yourself. Images and voice output are not available in groups on any tier. Director Mode is a line starting with /cmd that counts as a stage direction instead of dialogue: pick up the pace, drop a tic, have a character play more reserved. On the stronger models it works almost every time, on the free models in roughly half the cases, and the documentation says so itself.

Is SpicyChat safe? Rules, privacy and your chats

The question “is SpicyChat safe” has two answers, and they come out differently. The first concerns the company: behind it stands NextDay AI Incorporated in Montreal, jurisdiction Quebec, operating since 2023, with moderation, a ticket system and a Discord where moderators answer at impossible hours. I have not come across a publicly known data incident. The unclaimed Trustpilot profile sits at 2.0 out of 63 reviews, and the complaints are about automated moderation, waiting times and memory, not about billing tricks. That is the pattern of a platform with too few staff, not of a dishonest one.

The second answer concerns your chats, and there my table says 5 out of 10. The privacy policy is dated May 4, 2023, names a retention period of “as long as necessary” without quantifying it, describes no way to delete individual chats, and lists Google, Discord, Twitter and LinkedIn as login providers. The terms go further: they grant the company the right to copy, display, modify, distribute and sell your characters, their outputs and the chats with them, for any purpose, and to pass that permission on to partners. Whether chats are used for training is addressed in neither document.

The other half of the safety picture is the community guidelines, and they are the best document the platform has. All users and all characters must be at least 18, characters from children’s media are excluded entirely, and templates from media aimed at teenagers only with clear aging. Non-consensual scenarios are banned, explicitly including in fiction. Also banned are family roleplay, characters based on real private individuals, edited images of real people, photorealistic adult depictions, and adult content combined with extreme violence. Breaches lead to suspension. As someone who moderated a roleplay forum for six years, I find that exemplary clear: the filter is off and the house rules are long, and both at once is possible.

In practice that means: your own login, your own password, no real names, no addresses and no employers in scenes, and if you are especially careful, keep the entries in the Memory Manager general enough that they give nothing away out of context.

SpicyChat app, language and age check: the practical part

Finally the questions I get asked most. First, language: the interface, the documentation and most character descriptions are in English, but the characters answer in the language you write in. Scenes in another language run without trouble, and if you want a clean start in one, write a detailed first message and put a short note in that language into the lorebook. Anyone searching for a localized SpicyChat and expecting a translated app will be disappointed; anyone who just wants a scene in their own language will not.

Second, the app. For Android there is an official APK at spicychat.ai/download, with regular updates and the usual sideloading notices. For iOS there has been no app since August 27, 2025; Apple removed it, existing installations stopped working after September 25, 2025, and an appeal went nowhere. On an iPhone the route is Safari and “add to home screen”, which shows the same account and the same chats. The all-ages sister app PixelChat is in the stores, and a subscription bought there counts for SpicyChat. The SpicyChat login is the same across all of them.

Third, the age check. According to the documentation, adult content is only visible in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states after a check through a third-party provider, by video selfie or ID with face matching depending on the region. The documentation records that the platform never sees or stores those documents; the service provider only confirms eligibility. Declining is allowed, and the platform then stays usable in its all-ages form. No such requirement was listed for my own location at the time of this check, which is why this paragraph reports the documentation and not a run of my own.

Fourth, billing. You pay by card, bank transfer, Boosty or crypto; the bank transfer variant is a one-time payment that does not renew automatically, which is practically the safest way to test a month without having to think about canceling. SpicyChat publishes no refund rule, and that is exactly how you should plan: book a month, not a year, until you are sure. My cat Pixel slept through my reading of the terms of service, and that was the only point at which I envied him.

SpicyChat: frequently asked questions

Is SpicyChat free to use?

Yes, and with no card. You get the whole library, both free models SpicyChat Default and TheSpice, a context window of 4,096 tokens, replies up to 180 tokens, three personas, plus ads and a queue at peak hours. SpicyChat does not publish the daily limit; moderator statements and third-party tests name about 100 messages, with yours and the character's counted together, so roughly 50 exchanges. For one scene in an evening that is enough; for a campaign it is not.

What does SpicyChat cost per month in 2026?

Get a Taste is $5.95 a month or $60 a year, True Supporter $19.95 or $199.95, I'm All In $29.95 or $299.95. All three went up on September 8, 2026; before that they were $5.00, $14.95 and $24.95. Anyone who subscribed before that date keeps the old price as long as they do not switch tier or billing period. The amounts are shown in dollars on the checkout page; your own currency adds the exchange rate.

Which SpicyChat tier do I need for long roleplay?

True Supporter at $19.95. The free tier and the $5.95 tier both run on 4,096 tokens with replies up to 180 tokens, so what you buy there is quiet and comfort, not longer recall. True Supporter brings 8,192 tokens, 300 tokens per reply and Semantic Memory 2.0, which condenses older messages into searchable memories. In my test that was the first tier where a character still had a detail from the first session after a seven-day break.

Is SpicyChat safe?

As a company yes, with your chats only up to a point. Behind the platform stands NextDay AI Incorporated in Montreal, there is a detailed rule set, moderation and support by ticket and Discord, and I am not aware of any public data incident. The privacy policy, however, is dated May 4, 2023, names no retention period in days, describes no way to delete individual chats, and the terms allow your chats to be used for any purpose including sharing with partners. Use a dedicated login and write no real names into scenes.

Is there a SpicyChat app for Android or iOS?

For Android there is an official APK at spicychat.ai/download that you install outside Google Play, with the usual sideloading warning. For iOS there is no app any more: Apple removed it on August 27, 2025, existing installations stopped working after September 25, 2025, and the documentation considers a return unlikely. On an iPhone you add spicychat.ai to your home screen from Safari. Searching the stores for a SpicyChat AI app turns up the all-ages sister app PixelChat instead, and a subscription bought there also counts for SpicyChat.

Does SpicyChat work in languages other than English?

Characters answer in the language you write in, so a scene in your own language runs without any trick. The interface and the documentation are English, and the character descriptions in the library almost always are too, which can produce a language mix with imported cards. My practical advice: write a detailed first message in your language and put a short note in that language into the lorebook, and the character will stay with it. People searching for a localized SpicyChat AI app will not find one.

Can SpicyChat generate images in a scene?

Only from True Supporter up, and there only on characters marked for it; I'm All In unlocks it on every character, including your own. There are two styles, anime and semi-realistic, and the community guidelines still apply, so photorealistic adult depictions are off the table. The documentation itself says the image model misses details. I would not take it as a reason to subscribe: Candy AI is the better address for that.

Does SpicyChat require an age check?

In some regions. The documentation names the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states, where adult content only becomes visible after a check through a third-party provider, by video selfie or ID with face matching. SpicyChat writes that it never receives or stores these documents. You can decline and keep using the platform in its all-ages form. For my own location no such requirement was listed when I checked.

The verdict: is SpicyChat worth it?

SpicyChat gets a 7.9 out of 10 from me, which makes it a grade B. It wins on exactly the points I look at as a game master: a library I can pull a usable character out of immediately, a filter that does not turn an adult scene mid-sentence, a rule set that says where the line is, and tools for long scenes that are either missing or charged extra elsewhere. It loses points on privacy and on the $5.95 tier, which buys less than most people expect.

My route would be: a week for free, deliberately on a busy evening, so you know the queue and the daily limit. If you like the characters, skip Get a Taste and take True Supporter as soon as your scenes run longer than half an hour. If you notice along the way that what you actually want is one character over months, you are better off with Nomi, and if you want images, with Candy AI.

And one tip that stays unpaid but saves money: anyone who already had a subscription before September 2026 keeps the old price as long as they do not touch the tier or the billing period. Upgrade, downgrade or switch to annual, and the new price applies. So leave an old True Supporter at $14.95 alone.

I pay for every app myself and play the same three scenes everywhere. If you are unsure about SpicyChat, compare it against the other AI character apps in the ranking before you book a subscription.

I ran tabletop roleplaying groups for ten years and moderated a roleplay forum before I started testing AI character apps by the same standards in 2023. I pay for every subscription myself, play through the same three scenes and grade on a fixed scheme. About the author
