Why so many people are looking for Character AI alternatives in 2026
Four things came together, and any one of them alone might not have been enough. Moderation bites harder than it used to, the free tier picked up ads and counters, age checks locked out paying adults, and the service goes down regularly. If you are currently searching for sites like Character AI, you are probably stuck on one of those four.
The moderation. The rules ban non-consensual sexual content, graphic depictions of sexual acts and the glorification of self-harm, and none of that has changed. What changed is enforcement: since the safety update in October 2024 stricter classifiers have been running, and they judge intent rather than keywords. The result is the sentence you read in every forum: it is not explicit scenes that get blocked, it is an argument, a breakup, a kiss. For roleplay that is a structural problem, because tension does not work without discomfort.
The age checks. On October 29, 2025 Character.AI announced it would remove open chat for under-18s, completed by November 25, 2025; teenagers kept Scenes, Streams, AvatarFX videos and the feed. For classification the company uses its own age model plus external tools, and anything flagged leads to a selfie and ID check. It got uncomfortable for adults: independent observers date the first wave of such checks to April 2026, and on August 12, 2026 a date-of-birth prompt locked out many adults with a notice that they were no longer eligible.
The free tier. Since April 2026 ads have been running in the middle of the chat, grown according to user reports from five seconds with a skip button to thirty seconds without one. On top of that there is a daily limit on swipes and regenerations, a slow mode at peak hours, and Charms, the currency introduced at the end of 2025 through which extra swipes are sold. Anyone who started in 2024 now pays $9.99 to get back to where they were for free.
The availability. A status service has counted 568 incidents since it began monitoring in March 2025; in September 2026 alone the log shows events on the 1st, twice on the 5th and once on the 8th, twenty to thirty minutes each, plus an outage of two hours fifteen minutes on May 31 and one hour on June 17. On top of that, 2026 replaced the named chat styles with a single cheaper model, and the Play Store rating sits at 2.2 stars across 2.4 million reviews.

Nomi AI, $99.99/year, grade B |
| Ads, counters and slow mode |

Secrets AI, $19.99/month, grade B− |
| It should cost nothing |
a free tier with no card |

Joi AI, $47.99/year, grade C |
| You want to own your characters |
exportable character cards |
Chub AI, cards for free |
The fact that those four reasons are so different also explains why forum recommendations for good Character AI alternatives contradict each other. Someone who left over the moderation raves about a platform with a miserable memory, because they never notice it. Someone who left over the forgetting considers the same platform worthless. That is why every entry on this list carries a line about who the app is not for, and why the table above matters more than the ranking.
None of the nine alternatives here solves all four points. SpicyChat solves the moderation, Nomi the memory, Janitor the price, Secrets the noise. That is why my verdict has no universal winner, just an assignment by reason.
What switching actually costs you
You take three things with you and leave three behind. You can take the character description, the example lines and the greeting — everything you typed yourself. What stays behind is the conversation log, the community around a character, and the store apps, because apart from SpicyChat and Nomi every platform on this list works in the browser. That is not a real loss, since a web app pinned to your home screen behaves almost identically, but you should know it in advance.
The second cost is setup time. Character.AI is deliberately prerequisite-free: search, click, play. At Nomi you write a character first, at Chub you learn what a character card is, at Janitor you may end up configuring your own model key. Budget one evening where you set things up instead of playing, and choose accordingly: if you do not want to invest that evening, you end up at SpicyChat or Joi AI, because both serve the format one for one.
Character AI no filter: why you cannot switch the filter off
This question gets asked so often that it deserves a clear answer: there is no switch. Not in the settings, not in the subscription, not through a hidden account flag. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, with the subscription page showing $119.88 struck through, and by its own listing it buys: no ads, priority at peak hours, unlimited swipes and calls, 30 pinned memories instead of five, the extended lorebook, the premium chat styles, the highest daily limits, no slow mode and twenty percent more Charms. The content rules are identical on every one of those lines.
The second half of the answer is more technical. The filter is no longer a word filter, it is a model that estimates the intent of a message. That is why the tricks from the older forums do not work: rewordings, placeholders, asterisks, phrases dropped in from another language. At most they make the scene unreadable while the judgment lands anyway. And anyone who tries it systematically risks their account under the terms of service.
There is also an observation from my own scenes that often gets missed: the block usually does not hit the message you just wrote, it hits the pattern of the last ten. A scene that slowly gets more serious is eventually judged as a whole, and then it breaks off at a completely harmless point. For roleplay that is the most unpleasant kind of moderation, because it feels unpredictable. A strict filter is a legitimate product decision; an unpredictable one costs you the evening.
What does help is less spectacular and works immediately. First: write the scene less explicitly and more tensely, because many blocks come from the phrasing rather than the subject. Second: use the lorebook and the pins so the character knows her own hardness and does not get defused at every conflict. Third, and this is the honest recommendation: if your game keeps getting stuck on moderation, you are in the wrong product. The best Character AI alternative with no filter costs you fewer nerves than any workaround attempt, and both SpicyChat and Janitor AI can be checked for free.
What c.ai+ delivers and what it does not
| What you get |
What you do not get |
| no ads, no slow mode |
different content rules |
| 30 pinned memories instead of 5 |
memory at the level of Nomi or DarLink |
| unlimited swipes and calls |
an exemption from the age check |
| extended lorebook, premium chat styles |
the named chat styles retired in 2026 |
| priority at peak hours, 20% more Charms |
availability without incidents |
At $94.99 a year that is not a bad deal if ads and waiting were your only problem. It is a bad deal if you are here over the moderation or the memory, because neither is on the list. This is exactly where the audience splits: one half pays and stays, the other half goes looking for a Character AI alternative and lands on pages like this one.
Uncensored AI and no filter: what that really means
“Uncensored AI” is a marketing phrase, and in this category it means three different things. It is worth keeping them apart before you pay, because otherwise disappointment is built in.
Version one: no filter on text, but platform rules. That is the normal case at SpicyChat, Nastia, Secrets, DarLink and Joi AI. Between adult characters the scene runs, and there are hard limits enforced with suspension: no underage characters, no sexual content about real people, no non-consensual themes. Joi AI additionally checks every message with a classifier, which means moderation happens here too, just in a different place. These five are what most people actually mean by AI websites like Character AI without a filter.
Version two: you bring your own model. That is the route at Janitor AI and Chub AI. The platform supplies the library and the interface; the content is decided by the provider whose key you enter. It is the most open variant and at the same time the one with the largest small print: every message goes to that third-party provider, and its rules and privacy policy are the ones that apply.
Version three: images instead of text. Candy AI, DarLink and several others sell media through tokens or coins. For roleplay that only matters when a scene needs a picture, and it is the point where monthly bills run away from people. If you are looking for an AI with no filter on text, check first whether you want to pay for the media half at all.

Three bans apply everywhere and are enforced everywhere with account suspension: underage characters, sexual content about real people, and non-consensual themes. Anyone who believes “no filter” means “no rules” loses access, and loses with it the characters they spent weeks building. At Janitor AI that is written into the guidelines as a permanent suspension, and at SpicyChat likewise.
A fourth variant is often promised and does not exist: a platform with no limits at all. Payment processors, app stores and national law impose the same frame everywhere, and any provider claiming otherwise is either not telling the truth or will be changing its terms in a few months. So if you are looking for an uncensored AI, look for a platform that writes its limits down clearly instead of one that claims to have none. That is the difference between freedom and surprise, and as a game master you want the first one.
Three signals have served me well. First, a findable operator: Nastia names a French register number, DarLink a Swiss address, Nomi its company and jurisdiction. Second, a published refund rule, even a strict one; “no refunds” is more honest than silence. Third, documentation that names numbers — context window in tokens, cost per image — instead of promising “improved memory”. Nomi’s wiki and DarLink’s memory tiers are the best examples on this list, and Chub AI is the worst, because on the day I checked not even the privacy policy was reachable.
Websites like Character AI for roleplay in your own language
All nine apps understand and write languages other than English, and that is not the same as being built for them. The difference shows up exactly where it hurts: a character who answers with bite in English sounds a shade paler in another language, lands fewer wordplays and misses dialect and irony. These models are trained overwhelmingly on English text, and no provider on this list claims otherwise.
My compromise after many evenings: write the character description, the example lines and the greeting in English, but play the scene in whatever language you want. The traits then stay stable, because the model reads them in its training language, and the tone in the chat stays yours. How those fields are built is in my guide to creating your own AI character.
On the interface there are real differences. Candy AI, Joi AI and DarLink AI offer localized interfaces; at SpicyChat, Nomi, Nastia, Secrets, Chub and Janitor the interface is English while the chat obviously is not. For beginners that matters less than it looks, because in roleplay you work almost entirely inside the chat window anyway.
What genuinely improves outside English is consistency, as long as you keep the scene short. Long, nested sentences produce more drift in every model I tested than terse ones do. In my quiet evening Nastia, Nomi and Secrets AI were the three that held the tone without sliding back into English or falling into filler questions. Joi AI and Candy AI occasionally mixed English phrases in, which does not wreck a scene but you notice it.
The second stumbling block is names and forms of address. Models trained mostly on English lose formal and informal address faster than anything else, and a character who switches from formal to familiar in the middle of an interrogation stops being believable immediately. The trick is to put the address form into the character description rather than the chat — something like “addresses the player formally at all times”. At DarLink and Nomi that held reliably; at the rest I occasionally had to steer.
A practical note on paying: every platform bills in US dollars, because that is how the checkout is built. What lands on your account is the dollar amount at the day’s rate, at some banks with a foreign-currency fee on top. Several providers name in their terms the label that appears on your statement, and it often differs from the brand name; DarLink and Secrets AI do that, while at others the first statement stays a surprise. And finally the sober part: test monthly, buy yearly. The annual plans here are nearly half the monthly price almost everywhere, but the refund rules are strict, and a year at the wrong app costs more than three months at two right ones. My own route was one month of SpicyChat, one month of Nomi, and a decision only after that; the two months together cost less than a year of c.ai+ and settle the question for good.
And if you want to keep Character.AI anyway, that is not a mistake. For a filtered, generally accessible character chat with apps on both systems and the biggest library in the world there is still no better place, and c.ai+ repairs the ads. This list is for the others, the ones who keep running into a wall they cannot click away.
The full ranking of every platform I currently pay for is in my list of the best AI character apps.
