What a free AI chat really gives you in 2026
“Free” is not a price in this category, it is a construction, and there are exactly four of them. Once you see through that, you never waste another evening on a plan that was never going to carry a scene.
Shape one: unlimited with friction. Character.AI and PolyBuzz let you write endlessly and take your attention in exchange. Ads in the chat, slow mode or waiting times at peak hours, and at PolyBuzz the weaker Standard model on top. You never hit a wall, you just move more slowly.
Shape two: a real daily allowance. SpicyChat with a reported 100 messages a day, Nomi with around 50, Secrets AI with exactly 20. That is the most honest construction, because you can plan. What matters is not the number but whether the allowance runs on the same model as the paid account, and at SpicyChat and Nomi it does.
Shape three: a balance that does not refill. Lovescape gives a one-time batch of welcome chips, a listing names 80, and Joi AI ten starting neurons. That is not a plan, that is a voucher. Nastia sits in between, because the token allowance arrives daily, but a single image costs 50 to 80 tokens.
Shape four: the preview. Dream Companion with about ten messages, and Kindroid since October 1, 2026 with 50 interactions and read-only after that. Candy AI does not even have that. This shape is enough to hear the tone, never to judge.

The brake matters more than the number
When I compare two free plans, I look first at where they brake and only then at how much they give. A queue is annoying for an evening and gone the next morning. A daily cap you ration. But a locked model changes the product: you then rate the budget version and mistake the result for a verdict on the app.
That is the most common mistake I read in forums. Somebody tries a free AI chat, finds the character wooden and writes the platform off, even though the paid model is a different one. It works the other way too: a brilliant first evening on an ad-funded account says nothing about whether the character will carry your campaign for four weeks. Which app has which strength is what I sort out in my overview of the best AI character apps.
There is a third brake that appears on no pricing page: the context window. SpicyChat’s free account works with 4K tokens, and for a scene with several characters that is tight. What happens is not forgetting in the literal sense, it is something more unpleasant: the character invents plausible-sounding substitutes for the opening she can no longer see. Once you have seen that, you recognize it everywhere.
What a free-tier grade means in this list
My grades run from A to F and come out of memory, conversation quality, pricing honesty and privacy. A B here means: the free account carries weekly play, with one known weakness. A C means: you have to actively work around one thing, usually the balance or the memory. No app on this list has an A, and on the subject of free the reason is especially clear.
A generous free plan and a good memory are, economically, almost mutually exclusive. Long context costs compute per message, and nobody gives that away permanently. So you either get many messages with a short memory, as at Character.AI and PolyBuzz, or few messages with a full memory, as at Nomi. Anyone who understands that does not pick the biggest free plan but the one whose gap he can live with.
Three platforms here get no grade, and I would rather write down why: Character.AI, PolyBuzz and Kindroid I have not played through under the full protocol with my own money. They are on the list as reference points, because without them you cannot explain what the others do better or worse.
Free AI chat with no sign up: what works without an account or a card
The search for an AI chatbot with no sign up is understandable and in 2026 almost always leads nowhere. Every platform on this list wants at least an email address, and with the apps that carry adult content there is a solid reason: their own terms require an age of 18, and without an account you cannot even claim it.
What there is plenty of, on the other hand, is starting without a card. SpicyChat, Nomi AI, Lovescape, Character.AI and PolyBuzz let you play with no payment details, and that is the point that matters in practice: no subscription that renews automatically, no trial that converts. At Kindroid exactly that is different, because the three-day trial becomes a subscription with no further action.
A word about the age prompts, because they land on this question: every platform with adult content here requires a minimum age of 18 under its own terms, and several check it when you switch the relevant setting on. Character.AI shut off open chat for under-18s in the US at the end of November 2025 and has worked with an age estimate since. No free access on this list is a way around those limits, and if an app promises you that, it is not a serious operation.
A second workaround that gets recommended a lot is not worth it: using the same app with several accounts to get around daily caps. You lose exactly what makes an AI character chat work, namely the shared backstory, and at most providers you breach the terms. Cheaper and more honest is to test two apps for free in parallel, because the limits reset daily anyway.
And one note about name doubles, because on the subject of signing up it regularly costs money: for Joi AI, Lovescape, Dream Companion and Nomi, the stores hold apps from third parties that have nothing to do with the platform. Only download what you opened from the official site; a shortcut on your home screen does the same job and costs nothing.
Only three of these apps even exist in the stores
The fact that so many of these services are pure web apps has nothing to do with laziness and everything to do with the store rules: adult content does not get through there. The only real store apps on this list are Character.AI with iOS and Android, PolyBuzz with both systems and SpicyChat with Android plus a filtered iOS variant; Nomi has an iOS app and was not findable in the Play Store when I checked at the end of September 2026.
For you that means two things. First: at Candy AI, Nastia, Joi AI, Secrets AI, Dream Companion, Lovescape and Kindroid on the web, the browser is not the inferior route, it is the complete one. Second: where you subscribe is where you cancel. Pay in a store app and you will not find the cancel button on the website, and at PolyBuzz the upper tiers exist exclusively as in-app purchases.
The third point is the price itself. Store versions are occasionally more expensive, because the store fee rides along: Kindroid costs $13.99 a month on the web and $15.99 in the app, and the markup on the Ultra and MAX add-ons is documented too. So if you are starting free anyway, start in the browser and decide where to pay only afterwards.
Testing a free AI girlfriend: my seven-day plan
Testing a free AI girlfriend is not the same thing as chatting for free. With chatting, the evening counts; with a companion, the week counts, because the difference between a character and a chatbot is whether she still knows on day seven what happened on day one. For that I do not need a paid plan, only a plan.
Day one: plant three details that must not get lost in the chat window. A name, a promise, a dislike. I write those three sentences into the character description, not just into the conversation, because almost all forgetting comes down to a piece of information existing only in the history.
Days two to six: do nothing. That is the part everybody skips, and the only one that tells you anything. If you write every day, you keep the details warm in the context window and test nothing at all.
Day seven: come back and ask about the three details without naming them. Nomi AI held all three for me, and that was in the free account, because what is capped there is the messages, not the memory; how that works technically is in my Nomi review. Nastia AI was good too, Lovescape only remembers inside one conversation for free, and PolyBuzz forgets as soon as you leave the chat, per user reports.

The plan has a second purpose: it tells you whether you even miss the character after a week off. That is the most honest buying decision I know, and it costs nothing. If you want to turn the test into a continuing story, my guide to AI roleplay chat helps with the build.
Which scene you should play for free
Of my three scenes, the interrogation is the one I put into a free account, and always first. The character knows something, is supposed to keep quiet about it, and must not fall out of role doing so. That is the most uncomfortable task for a language model, because keeping quiet feels wrong to a helpful system, and that is why this scene splits the field.
Three of them got through it for free. Nastia AI was the best: the character kept quiet, asked questions back and laid a false trail I had not scripted. SpicyChat held the lie a long time and only drifted on detail afterwards. Nomi stayed consistent but calmer. Joi AI and Dream Companion wanted to resolve things and comfort me, and at Character.AI it was not the character who gave up, it was the moderation stepping in.
The tavern and the quiet evening, by contrast, are bad free tests, because almost every app passes them. A friendly conversation with no conflict of interest asks for little, and the apps’ opening scenes are optimized for exactly that. So if you only have twenty messages, as at Secrets AI, do not spend them on politeness, spend them on resistance.
Character.AI free versus the competition’s free AI chat
Character.AI is the reason all the other free plans exist at all, and it wins exactly one comparison point: volume. Unlimited chat, the biggest general library, real apps for iOS and Android, and no app on this list takes any of that away from it. If you simply want to write with AI characters for hours, you stay there.
Where it loses anyway is in three places. First, the friction: ads in the middle of the chat, standard since April 2026, plus slow mode and a swipe limit. Second, the memories, because five pins per conversation are too few for a campaign, and the extended lorebook sits in c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. Third, the filter, and that regardless of what you pay: adult content is not allowed, and in my tests the moderation steps into scenes that are merely uncomfortable, not explicit.
That third point is the actual reason for this list. If your problem is the filter, no free plan from Character.AI fixes anything, and neither does a subscription. In that case SpicyChat and Nastia AI are the free alternatives where the filter is off in the test account too, and the whole ordering is in my Character.AI alternatives.
PolyBuzz is the most interesting competitor in the same model, because it picks the same construction: huge library, ads instead of payment, adult content forbidden. It beats Character.AI on the sheer number of public characters and loses clearly on memory, because the models with Long Memory and Permanent Memory sit in the upper tiers at $19.90 and $29.90 a month. For an hour of browsing it is good, for a campaign it is not.
One point that is almost always forgotten in this comparison is language. All eleven apps understand and write languages other than English, but none is built for them, and on a free account that shows more than on a paid one, because the budget models have less room. Characters sound paler outside English, land a pun less often and slide more frequently into formal written register. My compromise after three years: write the character description in English, play the scene in your own language. Then the traits stay stable and the tone stays yours.
My suggestion for a free week
If you want to start at zero dollars and need a plan: take SpicyChat on the first evening and play the interrogation through, because it is the one place you get enough messages for a whole scene. On the second evening create a companion at Nomi AI, tell him the three details and leave him alone for a week. Use the days in between for Nastia AI if an open filter matters to you, or for Character.AI if the library and the apps matter more.
On day seven you then hold three things no marketing page delivers: a character who either stayed in role under pressure or did not, a memory result, and a feel for whether you missed the whole business after a week off. Only after that would I pay, and then monthly. Annual plans halve the price almost everywhere here, but Dream Companion excludes refunds for subscriptions and Joi AI names 14 days only for a one-time mistaken purchase.
What remains is the uncomfortable truth about all free access: it is built to show you the platform’s strength and hide its weakness. That is why, for free, I never play what the app is good at, I always play the scene that overtaxes it. A friendly conversation is something all eleven apps here manage. A character who is supposed to lie and does not resolve it, only SpicyChat, Nastia and Nomi manage in a free account, and with that the ranking of this list is essentially already explained.
