What separates an AI girlfriend app from a chatbot in 2026
Technically the difference is small; practically it is everything. An AI chatbot answers the last message. An AI girlfriend app holds a state: she knows how the evening started, she knows you told her something unpleasant on Tuesday, and she reacts differently today than yesterday, because yesterday something happened.
Distilled from twelve tests, four things carry an app into the second week. First, a context window that holds a long scene together at all. Second, a place outside the chat where facts live, so they do not slide out of the window. Third, a character description that contains behavior instead of adjectives. Fourth, a billing model that does not force you to top up in the middle of a scene.
More rides on that fourth point than you would expect. When an image costs 9 chips (Lovescape), a video 1,900 neurons (Joi AI) or a call 8 coins a minute (Dream Companion), you are doing arithmetic while you play, and doing arithmetic is the opposite of being immersed. Apps with a flat rate on text, such as Nomi AI and Nastia AI, therefore play more calmly, even when they look more expensive on paper.
Whether the marketing page says “AI girlfriend”, “AI companion” or “virtual girlfriend”, by the way, changes nothing about the product. The English terms are usually what you see on the home page because the operators sell internationally; a localized interface is then a translation, and how good it is you only notice in the chat. At Candy AI, Dream Companion, Lovescape and Joi AI my German-language roleplay ran cleanly, while on simpler models the character tips back into English after a few messages. If you want to play in a language other than English, test that on the free tier in the first ten minutes.
Style is the second decision made before you start. Realistic and anime are two switches inside the same app at Candy AI, Lovescape offers several image models, and Eternal AI has a generator of its own for the looks. So anyone who wants an anime companion has more choice at the image platforms than at the memory-strong apps: Nomi AI and Kindroid deliver selfies but no style builder.
And then there is the voice, which gets lost in most test reports and makes the biggest difference in real use. There are three levels: voice messages that get read aloud (Lovescape, Nastia AI, DarLink AI), real calls (Nomi AI, Kindroid, Dream Companion, Secrets AI) and nothing. My quiet evening runs consistently better with voice messages, because a pause before a sentence shows character that no text expresses. Just keep count of what it costs: at Secrets AI an audio call runs 50 Moments a minute, at Dream Companion 8 coins a minute, and at Nomi AI and Nastia AI the voice is included in the plan.
Why no AI girlfriend app here gets an A
The best grade in the field is Kindroid’s A−, and that is not an accident, it is the structure of the category. The apps with the best memory are restrained about tone, the apps with the most open tone have the thinnest legal pages, and the cheapest ones bill media separately. Four of the twelve show their real prices only after login. An app that solves all four at once is not something I found in 2026.
That is why the grade here is a buying aid and not a judgment about the people who use these apps. A C+ means: works, costs you attention at one known spot. A C− means: works, costs you attention at several spots at once.
Free AI girlfriend apps: what the free tiers really hold up to
“Free AI girlfriend app” is the second most common search in this niche, and the honest answer is this: for text it is enough at four apps, for everything else at none. I played every free tier until it ran out, counting as I went.

Two things jump out of that table. First, Replika’s free tier is the most generous and at the same time the narrowest, because the romantic layer sits entirely behind the paywall: you get unlimited text, but you do not get a girlfriend. Second, Eternal AI is the only route to playing without a subscription for good, because there diamonds run instead of a monthly fee.
If you only want to try a free AI girlfriend app, my order is: Nastia AI for uncensored text, Nomi AI for the memory, Eternal AI for writing quality without handing over a card. None of those three needs a credit card, and in all three you know after one evening whether the character suits you.
An AI girlfriend with no sign-up does not exist in this test field, and there is a technical reason for it: with no account there is no place for the character, the history and the memories, so there is no relationship across several evenings either. What does exist are accounts with no credit card and no real name. Secrets AI asks for no name at sign-up and ties the free tier to the device, Lovescape and DarLink AI let you start without payment details, and at Nomi AI an email address is enough. That is the realistic version of “no sign-up”, and it is enough for an honest test.
One more note on the order in which you pay: four of the apps here advertise an annual plan that halves the monthly price, but show the figures only after login. Buy the first month monthly anyway. Dream Companion explicitly rules out refunds for subscriptions, Eternal AI declares every purchase final, and DarLink AI only reviews within 24 hours of purchase. A month costs you $12 to $20 and, in the bad case, saves you a year.
What a free tier actually costs you
Nothing in money, but something else. Every free tier runs on an account, and every operator stores the conversations. Candy AI’s privacy policy says third parties can read messages and that chats feed into training; Joi AI’s says chats improve the answers and develop the AI further; at GirlfriendGPT data stays for up to six years after you delete the account. A separate email address is therefore not paranoia, it is hygiene.
Virtual girlfriend with a memory: who still remembers after seven days
This is the part of the protocol that makes the ranking. In the first session I mention three concrete details: the name of my cat, an argument with a neighbor and a promise for Friday. Then I take a seven-day break, come back and ask. Nothing pinned, nothing repeated.

Three lessons from that. First, memory is a buying decision, not a model difference: DarLink AI writes Basic, Enhanced and Living memory straight into its plan lines, GirlfriendGPT sells 8K and 16K context as tiers, and Lovescape asks you to jump to Creative Pro at $64.99 a month for memory across chats. When an app forgets, it is often the plan and not you.
Second, an editable panel is worth more than a big window. At GirlfriendGPT I can look at a wrongly learned memory, correct it and delete it; at Candy AI I can only hope. In a relationship running over months, that is the difference between maintenance and starting over.
Third, discipline helps more than money. Anyone who writes three lines into the note field at the end of every session gets more out of a mid-range app than someone who leaves everything to the model at Nomi AI. How to plan that budget I have written up in detail in my guide to the AI roleplay chat.
What you can do yourself to help her remember
Three habits that work in every app on this list, including the weak ones. First: facts do not belong in the chat, they belong in the field the app provides for them. At Nomi AI that is Backstory+, at GirlfriendGPT the memory panel, at Nastia AI the note field, at Dream Companion the character description. Anything that lives only in the chat eventually slides out of the window.
Second: do not correct in conversation. “That is not who you are” holds for an hour; a changed line in the description field holds for good. That sounds banal and it is the most common mistake I see from readers who write to me that their character is “broken”.
Third: summarize yourself. Two sentences at the end of the session (“we argued, she gave in first, the promise for Friday still stands”) are easier for any model to process than 40 messages of history. At apps with a tight context, meaning Candy AI, Lovescape on Premium and GirlfriendGPT Premium, that is the difference between a continuation and a restart.
Create your own AI girlfriend or take a ready-made character
This is the first real fork in the road, and it decides which app suits you. Both routes work; they only cost time at different points.
The builder route pays off when you have a specific person in mind. The most control comes from Nomi AI with Backstory+ and the Identity Core, Nastia AI with its behavior dials, Dream Companion with the most individual fields and GirlfriendGPT with a character sheet of 2,500 tokens. Twenty minutes of typing is realistic, and the character then carries for weeks. Which fields really count and which you can leave empty is written out step by step in my guide to your own AI character.
The library route pays off when you want to play tonight. Joi AI has the best filterable selection, Lovescape the liveliest community with over 350,000 published characters, and at Eternal AI a matchmaker suggests a character instead of making you search. The price for that is arbitrariness: ready-made cards are often good as an opening and flat as a person, and you notice it in the third scene.
My own route by now is a mix. I take a ready-made character as a blank, play one evening, and afterwards write into the description field what I want to keep: two habits, one contradiction, one way of speaking. That is a quarter of an hour of work and it saves the character from the point where all ready-made cards start to sound alike.
One point almost nobody reads before building: who actually owns the character? At Joi AI the terms say the created character belongs to the platform, and according to independent tests every further character of your own costs 1,000 neurons. Lovescape grants itself a worldwide, non-exclusive license to user content and allows uploads only from verified Pro users. At Secrets AI the first character of your own is free and every further one costs 500 Moments. So if you have worked on a persona for two weeks, there is no app here you can export it from. In practice that means: write your character description in a text file first and paste it in, then you still have it at the next switch.
A warning about looks: Nomi AI anchors every later image to the anchor you pick when you create. Move it in week two and suddenly somebody else is sitting in your scenes. Decide the appearance before the first selfie, not after.
Which AI girlfriend app suits which kind of evening
If you have half an hour in the evening and mostly want to talk, take an app with a flat rate on text: Nomi AI at $8.33 a month on the annual plan, Nastia AI at $15.99 monthly with voice included, or Kindroid Standard at $11.67 on the annual plan if writing quality matters more to you than an open tone. In all three you can play for an hour without keeping an eye on a balance.
If your scenes need images, the arithmetic turns around. Candy AI is then the shortest route: $3.99 a month on the annual plan plus 100 tokens, and an image costs 2 to 4 of them. Anyone who wants more ends up at token packs from $9.99, and an image-heavy month costs $25 to $35. Lovescape is the alternative when the library matters more than the image quality: $7.99 a month on the annual plan with 600 chips, so around 66 images.
If you play rarely, every subscription is the wrong answer. Eternal AI bills by consumption, and $9.99 for 400 diamonds lasts a whole month on pure text plus a few images. And if anybody else sees your card statement, Secrets AI at $19.99 a month is the more expensive but only answer in this field that stays discreet both at sign-up and on the statement.
And if what you actually want is scenes with side characters, group chats and an open tone rather than a fixed relationship, you are better served in the other category: the ranking for that is in my best AI character apps, and anyone arriving from Character.AI will find the right moves in the Character.AI alternatives.
